Cultural history of noni fruit
There are also a number of other names for the species such as Ba Ji Tian, Nono; Nonu, Cheese Fruit,…in different cultures around the world.

The earliest documents about this plant were found and used very early by the ancestors of the Polynesian people. Polynesians use noni fruit juice as a medicine to treat many diseases. The roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers and fruits of the plant are all effective, in a variety of combinations with nearly 40 herbal remedies found in the records.
Noni fruits and leaves have been used as food in many countries, since the early twentieth century. On the Pacific islands as well as in South and Southeast Asia, records show that noni was an edible fruit but its taste was described as similar to bad cheese; it is often used as a famine food rather than a dietary staple.

Meanwhile, in Rarotonans it is considered a nutritious food; Burmese people often use it as an ingredient to prepare curry. Australian Aborigines in the Northern Territory often eat noni fruit during the dry season from May to August. Noni leaves are eaten both raw and cooked in Java and Thailand. In Tahiti, fish is wrapped in leaves as part of the grilling process to impart a nutty flavor to the cooked fish.
Although noni juice has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, its use is still under scrutiny due to potential risks and unproven health claims.
What is it used for?
The leaves have also been used to treat gout, tuberculosis and ringworm. The seeds are eaten in order to expel intestinal worms in the Philippines. This plant has also been popular as a source of red, yellow and purple dyes. Most of the commercial Noni or Morinda juice available in the market today contains variable amounts of other fruit juices, due to the fact that Noni juice is considered to be unpalatable.
